Scott,

We have pad worms here in Maryland also. A couple of techs in my
shop have kept them as "pets", having fed them a flute pad now and
again. In fact, we kept one in a plastic box in our showcase to show
customers what had made the holes in hteir pads. We've seen instruments
as new as one year old stored for the summer in a closet attacked by
these critters. It has nothing to do with age, and I think it probably
is the same type of larva that causes holes in other wool products.

BTW, our little friend became so popular, that Bryant Wharton (one
of our techs at the time), made several puppets out of flute and/or
clarinet pads by gluing them one on top the other until they were about
8 inches long. Of course to this he added a cute little face with
antennae, etc. He would then send these little guys out into the world
to create more work for us... :-)

later,

Steve
