To practice regularly or not depends a lot on the individual and their
relationship with their instrument. My wife (French horn) hates to
practice, always has always will. The horn "came naturally" to her and
once she learned the basics she was off and running on only 2 or 3
practices a week. Even now she will never practice until the night
before she's to perform or a dress rehearsal. Drives me nuts. Yet she
is an incredible horn player and is much in demand. I on the otherhand
have my flute, clarinet and saxes laid out on a spare bed and work my
way through a stack of music everyday for at least 30 minutes and often
more. I rarely run scales or do etudes, but rather hammer away at the
same 6 or 7 pieces playing the difficult parts over and over. Both of
us love music and both of us actively play and sing into our mid and
late 50s; different strokes for different folks. John
