Indeed, I've read that Eddie Daniels first contact was with the sax,
but he took clarinet lessons as a child, entered a performing arts
high school as a clarinet major, and earned his advanced degree in
clarinet performance.

He may have started on sax, but the overwhelming influence on him
came from his years of clarinet playing.

As to other saxophonists who started on clarinet: Phil Woods, Paquito
D'Rivera, Walt Parazaider. Also, Ramon Ricker at Eastman and Eugene
Rousseau earned their advanced academic degrees in clarinet.
