I've had "worm holes" left in some pads of a stored clarinet by
carpet beetle larvae. These pests look like tiny fuzzy caterpillars.
They love to eat holes in wool clothes, as well as clarinet pads. They
breed in dust, small animals such as slugs or crickets that may have
crept indoors and died, and in stored food in the kitchen. Besides
controlling their food sources, keep your clarinet and your clothes
up off the floor, where most of them are.
