This is another example of personal preference. Bill acts like
Selmer and Yamaha are the only Saxophones to consider.
I find many sax players who seem to feel this way. When I
was looking for a sax for my daughter for Christmas, I started
looking with the preconceived notion that Yamahas made the
best sax for the money and Selmers, though overpriced, were
the best you could buy. I ended up with a Yanagasawa, which
to me, was a better sax than any Selmer I tried. The keys seem
to mold to the shape of my hands and the sound was very
beautiful. Even though it cost more than the Selmers, I got it.
My daughter loved it. Then when marching season came, I
got her an old Yamaha for $250 that she could march with.
Guess what? She likes the Yamaha better than her $6,000
Yanagasawa! It seems that for her small hands, the Yamaha
was a better fit. I should have forgotten about the idea of
surprising her with a new sax for Christmas and brought her
along with me to see what was the best fit for her.
Incidently, it seems to me that there are more differences in
different models of Saxes than there is for Clarinets.
