Lisa,
I've never heard of the term "hooking" but I wonder if it could
refer to the jazz player's technique of "scooping" or "bending" into a
note. I do this by attacking the note while my embouchure is very loose
and then immediately tightening up. However, this won't help you with
doing a gliss. It sounds like you're doing all the right things anyway.
Incidentally, when you get real good at glisses, you'll learn how to do
them with the throat and not the fingers. This is the way Jazzers and
folk musicians do it.
