Jay, on matters of fact I am always prepared to go to the mat with
anyone. I think we are equally intolerant of people who mistate
facts, or don't know them.

With respect to my comments on the matters raised by Neil Leupold,
we are not dealing with factual issues. We are dealing with
opinions on the role of the performing artist. You have yours. I
have mine. It is difficult to know if either of us is anywhere near
the truth or if both of us are. I expressed how I felt honestly.

But when dealing with opinions, one should, I hope, take a much more
tolerant attitude than I detected in your note. I would hope, of
course, that an intelligent and articulate person such as yourself
would agree with me, but if not, then the next best thing that I can
hope for is that you reject the opinion without resorting to irony in
an attempt to defeat it.

I am grateful to you for having shared with me how you feel on these
matters, and I read your opinions with great interest, though I could
not agree with most of them.
