Subj: Tom's comments on Clarinet Choir

Jay,

I can'tspeak for all schools or organization's, but my clarinet choir
pieces were commissions. If someone asked you to write for say...6 flutes
& a kazoo, would you say No, because you didn't know of a school that
used a kazoo in ensemble music.

As to the eralier post about the Strauss w/2 Bb's & 2 A's simultaneously
(unisonal writing), why not? There are lot's of examples of Clarinet &
Flute, Clarinet & Piccolo, Bass Trombone & Cello in orchestral
literature. Would you question the composer's intention here? Could it
possibly be that all of the A Clarinets that Strauss "heard" sounded so
much different than all of the Bb's he'd heard? Think about the
instrument's played when the piece was written, instead of just thinking
of today's instruments.
