One of my clarinet teachers told me that all clarinetists should be able
to transpose up or down, a minor 2nd, major 2nd or minor third. This
makes it possible to play any clarinet part, written for A, Bb or C on
any other instrument. Naturally, this is also easier said than done, but
is a valuable skill.
