I think I get Dan's point - that basically a great clarinetist sounds as he
or she does because of what they do, not what instrument they do it on. And I
certainly agree with this premise.

I'm not sure that I follow what Dan means, however, when he differentiates
between "playing better" and "sounding better." I'm am pretty sure that when
I play better, I also sound better. Does that not make sense? I guess when I
talk about how a player "sounds", I mean more than just "timbre".

In any case, I certainly don't agree that any instrument sounds exactly like
any other, if played by the same person. Maybe Dan's ears tell him that; mine
don't.
