This whole discussion reminds me of a comment once made by Isaac Asimov in
response to a very detailed analysis that someone had made of one of his
books. His reaction was, basically, that the analysis was very interesting
but not at all what he had intended when he had written the book.
My suspicion is that different composers have different reasons for
specifying Bb or A clarinets, and that these various reasons may or may not
all have a basis in fact. (This opinion is based purely on supposition on my
part, since I don't recall ever having the opportunity to actually ask a
professional composer, so I may be in the same category as the person who
wrote the analysis of Asimov's book :-)
