You can certainly get a good d clarinet from buffet, if you are willing
to pay the price (over $3000). I have not come across any passages that
I absolutely could not play on e-flat, although some would certainly be
easier on the d.
Incidentally, Strauss himself admitted that the e-flat, not the d,
should have been used in Till, Why force yourself to play high a-flats
exposed if you can avoid it?
The color of the d is indeed slightly different from an e-flat. This is
similar to the A/B-flat difference. Hope this helps.
