The band you're asking about is the Lake Highlands High School Band under
the direction of Eddie Green. He taught in the Richardson Independent School
District (Richardson, TX) at Lake Highlands from the fall of 1964 through
spring of 1976. He directed the High School band from fall, 1970 until spring
of 1976. He is now band director at the University of Houston.
The Lake Highlands Band was truly one-of-a-kind and, at the risk of
sounding egotistical about it since I played in the ensemble, I've never
heard a high school group that could come anywhere close to this group on
most any measure you might choose, and I've heard a huge number of bands over
the years. In fact, there are only a handful of college bands that perform up
to the LH standard, in my opinion.
The CD's (there are two) were originally produced for a reunion of
students, private instructors and teachers held last August in Dallas. They
contain the following examples of works this band performed between spring,
1971 and spring, 1976:
"Till Eulenspiegel..."--Strauss/Hindsley, "La Fiesta Mexicana"--H. Owen Reed,
"Enigma Variations" (excerpts)--Elgar/Slocum, "Concerto for Orchestra" (mvmts
I, III, and V)--Bartok/Irwin, "March (4th movement) from Symphonic
Metamorphosis"--Hindemith/Baird, "Variations and Fugue"--Giannini, "Bachianas
Brasilieras #4"--Villa-Lobos, "The Festival of Baghdad" (4th mvmt. from
Scheherezade)--Rimsky-Korsakov/Hindsley, "Finale to Symphony
#5"--Prokofiev/Helm, "The Rite of Spring"--Stravinsky/Rives-Jones.
The Bartok, Prokofiev and Stravinsky pieces were arranged specifically for
this band and are not published, although I've heard that The Army Band and a
couple of college bands have borrowed the parts and score and attempted the
Stravinsky. The version of the Stravinsky on this CD set is an edited
version. The original recordings of the performances of the complete piece
have been lost. I've also heard that the Villa-Lobos and the specific
arrangement of the Hindemith are also no longer published, but I'm not sure
about that.
There is a commercial version of these CD's available through Mark Custom
Records, Inc.--P.O. Box 406--Clarence, NY 14031-0406. The phone number is
716-759-2600.
I either have or know where there are tapes of many other performances done
by this group. If anyone is interested, e-mail me and I'll send you a list.
Regards,
George Landis
