Many years ago I judged a solo/ensemble contest where a young lady
came in an informed me she was going to play the clarinet polka. When she
and her accompanist started, the melody we heard wasn't anything like the
"Clarinet Polka" that we've heard so often. Upon examining her music I
found that she had the 3rd Clarinet part to a trio arrangement of that
piece. Her band director hadn't listened to her play and had assumed she
had the 1st part. You know what they say about assumption......!
