(1) The technique of the A & B flat are NOT precisely the same - there are some
fingerings which only work properly on one or the other, and there are
differences in response; for instance the clarino reg. notes from g to b are
harder to produce cleanly on the A.
(2) The D clarinet is certainly not extinct - it just doesn't go out much ....
