Subj: A Matched Set of Basses?

With all this talk about Eb vs. D and Bb vs A soprano clarinets, I'm
forced to wonder about the difference between Bb bass clarinet and A bass
clarinet. I'm working up a few excerpts for an audition, and two of the
five pieces are for A bass clarinet. Both are transposable to Bb (no low
Eb). Is that done to match what are probably A soprano clarinets on top,
or because there is that much of a sound difference between Bb and A.

Does anyone out there have a matched set of basses, or do you just transpose?
