This is for Frances, but others might want to help out with the reference.

I seem to remember that Jean-Jacques Rousseau was also frustrated by the
conventional method of musical notation. He developed his own system,
hoping that it would catch on and make life simpler for all of us. It
didn't, but Frances' dad may find it interesting, particularly since it
used numbers (as I recall). It seems to me he sketched it in an early
essay that should be available in any edition of his complete works.
