Chuck,

You ask an important question regarding editions. For some works, e.g. by
Weber, Mozart and other early composers, the differences among editions will
be many and significant. Some will be greatly modified by an
editor/performer/scholar. Others will present more or less exactly what the
composer wrote, to the extent that this can be known. For example, the
International edition of the Weber 2nd Concerto has a clarinet part edited by
Reginald Kell. The clarinet part in the included piano score, however,
"corresponds to the autograph of the orchestra score." It is instructive to
compare these two versions of this clarinet part to see the differences of
dynamics, articulations, tempo markings and even notes. Then realize that
most of the other available editions will contain the totally different ideas
of other editors.

Ideally, take a look at several editions at a library, or eventually own a
few. Certainly see one which, as the International, lets you know what Weber
actually wrote. Then the viewpoints of various editors can be valuable from
the standpoint of developing your own personal interpretation. In the end,
you'll be creating your own edition with your own interpretive markings,
probably with the advice of a teacher.
