To which I would like to add,
The easiest way I know of to mute your clarinet is to cross your legs (an
open cross with ankle on knee) and place the bell against your pant-leg
enshrouded calf muscle. Long pants are necessary because you have to allow
a small amount of air to escape from the bell.
