Hello everyone,
I was just told of the death of R. Andrew
Coburn, a professional here in the Cleveland/Akron/
Canton area. I saw him perform once with the
Cleveland Chamber Symphony yet I never met him.

For the benefit of those on the list who may have, here
is the notice as it appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer
on Sunday, May 28.

Plain Dealer Reporter

Cleveland- R. Andrew Coburn knew the satisfaction of
pursuing his childhood dreams.
He was a Cleveland area professional clarinetist
who laid the groundwork for his musical career in Central
Florida.
He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and moved
to Orlando, Fla., at an early age.
He moved here in 1984 and studied with Cleveland
Orchestra members Franklin Cohen and Theodore
Johnson, as well as John Norton and Fred Ormand of the
University of Central Florida. He established himself here
as a free-lance musician and member of several area
ensembles.
Mr. Coburn, 35, died at home Tuesday of
complications from AIDS. He was surrounded by
friends and family.
He was a member of the Canton and Akron
symphony orchestras and solo clarinetist with the
Cleveland Chamber Symphony.
He then became a founding member of the
Trinity Chamber Orchestra and Players. He was a charter
member of the New Music Associates in Cleveland; he
shared his talents as a teacher and was a mentor to his
clarinet students at Hiram College, Western Reserve Academy
and Skyline Music.
He was involved with the Living Room, and AIDS/HIV
drop in center in Cleveland. He also worked with the Ohio
AIDS Coalition.
He was a finalist in the Juenesses Musicales International
Clarinet Competition in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1987.
Survivors include his companion, John Phillip
Ferguson; his parents, Ralph and Beryl Coburn of Cocoa
Beach, Fla; two sisters, and a brother.
A memorial service will be held today at Trinity
Cathedral, E.22nd St. and Euclid Ave.
The family suggests contributions be made to
The Living Room, 1410 W.29th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44113.

I extend my deepest sorriness for all who knew who him. Let's pray
we find a cure for AIDS.

Sincerely,
Michael A. Cassara,
Cleveland, Ohio
