Dan Leeson mentioned bone conduction as one way in which we might "hear"
ourselves play. You can make a very good demonstration for yourself if you
have a tuning fork: strike the fork and hold the end of its stem on one
of your upper incisors. The effect will be unmistakeable. If you try this
with a lower incisor, there will be a much smaller effect, because the lower
jaw doesn't have a direct bone pathway to the inner ear - the sound must
travel through the soft tissue of the jaw joint.
