During the 70's a large number of clarinetists on the East Coast
used Selmer "D" Crystals. They were a lot of fun to play. I think one
of the major differences Dan Leeson hit upon; the material feels
different in your mouth. Alot of people felt that their sound was
better (ie. brighter,darker, bigger, more centered, etc.) There was one
thing for certain. You heard yourself differently and I think you heard
yourself _louder_ due to bone conduction. The nice thing about the
Selmer "D" was they were affordable, about $20.00 or 25.00 if I
remember correctly. Even then, that was not alot of money.

BTW, the largest single factor in our using the Selmer "D" was the
a Selmer clinician and teacher at the Armed Forces School of Music. Al
Asercion was a real inspiration for many of us coming up thru the
ranks.
