In response to John Baetens questions about register.
I have always been taught that the 'low notes' (low E to third line Bb)
were referred to as the 'chalemeau' register, since the predecessor to the
clarinet (which could basically only play low notes) was the chalemeau. The
notes over the break (third line B to two ledger line C) were referred to as
the 'clarion' register, and the notes above that were known as the 'altissimo'
register. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
