I think that the long tone studies in the upper register are very important.
Even though you roomate might get pissed off.
Double high C seems to be the norm for range. Although those notes should be
seen and note heard too much.
In improvisation, it can get annoying. However if it is written on the part.
You should play it...
You said that f and above gets shrill. Don't move your lips too much too try
and hit those high notes. Just play them.
