You are correct, Ed that transcriptions for orchestra invariably
retain the original key, but that is not true for transcriptions
to band instrumentation. There the key selected is most often
not the original key in order to prepare something that is not
overwhelming to the variety of players. I mentioned the other day
that the Beethoven 7 transcribed for wind octet is in something like
concert C instead of the original concert A.
