On the high notes there are no boundaries. I suppose it may be interesting
to look at it this way: If you can get a *Superb* tone on, say a high A,
then try A#, B, etc. The high notes can be played with a nicer tone than
any note on a horn if played right. After many years of work, I suppose one
could get the tone of one like Eddie Daniels or Richard Stoltzman. There is
something wonderful happening when Eddie Daniels hits a high C or so. There
is a special form of vibrato that has been evident in many modern
recordings. To hear what I mean I would suggest listening to the
Breakthrough album Eddie did for GRP in 1986. Try the song Circle Dance.
Yes, in answer to your question there are many notated works that go
far beyond 4th line A. Benny Goodman hit a high c on a cut of Sing, Sing,
Sing. I know Eddie Daniels can get much higher than this with his brilliant
tone as well. It's an interesting topic, has anyone else noticed this new
vibrato quality?
