John,

I agree with you about keeping the reed moist. The little moistness I give
it while I'm resting seems to do the job on a good reed. But I am not sure I
follow you on the dry reeds do well if you picked them well...or they're not
dependable anyway. As I'm sure you know, the reed can begin to warp as it
dries do to uneven wetness and the different paces that different parts of
the reed dry. If the reed does dry enough to the part of warping, anyone
could be in for a little unpredictability. Good reeds make this less likely
I agree, but the problem doesn't go away because the reed is dependable.

I think we both agree the best solution is to find a way to keep it moist.
Anyone one of the suggestions listed previously are adequate in my
experience.
