I have played in several pit orchestras and have experienced this many
times. It is very frustrating, but good practice all the same! One
conductor told us the reason this happens, has something to do with the
range of the singers. Apparently when you rent parts for a musical you
can choose what key you want the parts in based on what the ranges of the
singers are. This would explain a lot of the wierd keys. I don't know
if this is true or not; I am just relating what a conductor told me!
