Dan Leeson's description of how Basset Horns in G resulted in
them playing in difficult keys reminded me of how I, as a high
school student, attempted to transfer my classical clarinet playing skills
to a more contemporary format. I decided the easiest way
to go would be to become a rock'n'roll sax player. After shelling
out what seemed to be a fortune for a used alto sax, I soon
realized that most all rock'n'roll tunes were written in A or E, which
translates to F# and C# on an Eb instrument! It was then that
I decided to learn to play guitar.
While on the same subject, does anyone know why stage show
composers like Andrew Lloyd Webber always seem to write in
weird keys like Db?
