Klarinet Archive - Posting 000507.txt from 1995/05

I am reading through the Harbison variations for
piano, violin, and clarinet for a rehersal this
Thursday. It has some mildly confusing notation.
In one movement (second to last I think, my parts
are at home), the clarinet part is notated with
a line marked "1" above a line marked "2" and
linked as though it were a duet. I'm fairly
sure that they are not to be played together.
Does one just play part "1" and then part "2" after?
Am I just being dense? Is there another interpretation?
Why then not write one part after the other? Can
someone help?

many thanks,
Adam Pease
