What nostalgia! I had almost forgotten that my first wooden
clarinet was a Martin Freres instrument. I don't remember what the
precise inscription on the clarinet was or exactly how the manufacturer
represented itself. But French grammar notwithstanding, the line was
uniformly referred to in the U.S. as Martin Freres clarinets.

I had played on a Pruefer ebonite instrument (with a Chedeville
mouthpiece) from 1946 to about 1949, at which time I bought the Martin
Freres clarinet. I played it for 10 years before I got my first
Buffet.

I have pleasant memories about the instrument. It was an OK clarinet.
