I, too, have a clarinet made by Freres Martin. It is an E-flat,
made of boxwood, with ivory rings and silver keys. I've been told
that it was made somewhere around 1840. I looked up Freres Martin
in a directory of instrument manufacturers, and it said that they
started business around 1830, and are still in business (although
it was an older directory - I don't recall what was the "present"
at the time the book was published). I was wondering if Frere
Martin is the same as the modern "Martin" instrument company.
