Sorry, I haven't been on in a while, so this may be a bit late...

I always thought we tuned to the oboe because of its' overtones...that
string players have problems hearing the A from other instruments because
their overtones don't give them a pure enough pitch...or whatever it is
they need to tune...

how wrong is this concept?
