Subj: Old quotes on disassembly

Here are a few of old quotes from the archieves about leaving the
clarinet assembled

... my experience has been that there is no significant problem
in doing this but the corks on the tenon joints will begin to
fit loosely after a while. Since they don't breathe or expand
(or whatever they do when the instrument is not assembled), they
loose their umph.

Cary Karp wrote:
However, cork will shrink if left under constant
pressure. This shrinkage is largely recoverable, but
it's preferable not to leave instruments assembled for
long periods of time. This should also be kept in mind
before using a case which requires that the bell be kept
attached to the lower joint. (Buffet's double case for
the Elites, despite its extreme elegance, suffers from
this flaw.)

Clark W Fobes wrote:
... Clarinets very often will crack around the register tube
when the barrel is left on with moisture in the joint. As
the wood swells at the tenon the strain is just too great
and the joint will fracture at the nearest weakest point.
... I believe that it is best to swab the
clarinet, including all joints, carefully before
putting it away. Also avoid leaving a clarinet assembled
without this careful swabbing process.
