A couple of days ago, I posted a query about how it is that Clarinets
seem to have the "upper hand" (vs. Oboes, Flutes, and Bassoons) in terms of
technical flexibility and overall flexibility. Flutes have projection
problems
in the low register, as well as some impossible trills; Oboes have dynamic
control problems in the lower register, and seem to be affected the most by
the
playing environment; and Bassoons have a multitude of problems, ranging from
impossible key-work (imagine, 11 keys for two thumbs!), lack of fluidity in
the
lower register, and the same dynamic and enviornmental problems at Oboes.
Clarinets, on the other hand, have no "impossible" keying (some
pattersn/trills/tremolos are harder than others, but with a little practice
there isn't really anything we can't play), and we have more dynamic
flexibility than any other instrument. How'd we get so lucky?

I guess we are pretty lucky, until we try to find a reed, that is. Also, it
has been widely reported that some clarinets squeak in the case. Try
sneaking up on yours in the middle of the night and check it out.
