Alll this talk of intonation and 'fridge pitches reminds me of something one
of my quintet coaches told me about trying to improve intonation skills. It
could apply to quintets or to orchestras or whatever.....

Listen to the sustained sounds that occur around you. This could be the
sound of an appliance hum, or the wind blowing, or if you really can't find
anything else a piano or electronically produced tone (ie a Korg tuner's
tone). Concentrate on that pitch and see how closely you could match it
first by singing the pitch and then playing it. Some sounds are actually
more than one pitch. If that is the case, isolate the pitches and match
those. It can require a great deal of concentration, but if you can play in
tune with some of those sounds, you could probably play in tune with just
about anything...
