Scott McChesney writes about the technical advantages of clarinet
over other woodwind instruments. This is something I've always
wondered about myself. After playing clarinet for many years, then
taking up sax and flute, I often wondered why these other
instruments do not take advantage of the technology inherent in
clarinet. I am particulary puzzled by the saxophone, since it
was invented after the clarinet.
Scott, your first love is french horn, then clarinet, and you go nuts
over oboe solos. How about Beethoven's sixth, third movement,
where the oboe solo is taken over by the clarinet, who soon
finishes off with a quick run into the lower register, followed by
the same theme on horn? Great stuff!
