(1) Some time ago I read that the telephone dial tone in the UK was
at 440 Hz. Can anyone verify this?

(2) I received a nice compliment once from a student in my Physics of Music
class. I had just got a Bulova Accutron watch (controlled by an internal
tuning fork). She noticed it and I had her listen to the hum of about 350 Hz.
She asked me what note it was, and I told her F. She replied "Oh, they should
have given you an A." Talk about double meanings!
