Dan Leeson had some excellent (as usual) remarks about
the reality of improvisation in classical music of the
late 1700s.

While looking up some information about some dance music
by Czerny (yes, that Czerny!) in Groves recently, I found
references to a book on improvising piano in the classical
style that he had written. I'd be fascinated to see what
was said in that time about the subject.

Dance music and improvisation--that sure changes the picture
of Czerny one might have from "The School of Velocity" alone!
