I also returned to playing after a long absence (about 15 yrs). I rented an
instrument for a while since my old horn was unplayable and not worth
repairing. When it came to buying a new one I went to Bob Gilbert's in L.A. to
look at R-13's. He showed me the Buffet C12 which is supposed to be the same
as the R13 only made by apprentices (by definition, masterpieces?). This is
what I did buy and it saves a lot of money. In the fall, winter Woodwind and
Brasswind catalog these were advertised as a special in the back of the catalog
for about $750 which is considerably less than what I spent at Gilbert's saving
even more money. Both my instructor and I thought the sound was very similar
to her R13's.
I've found that the equipment choices are trivial compared to getting enough
time to play and finding ensembles to play with. I played in a community band
for a while and am getting together with some friends to play. With friends
it's always difficult to find music for the odd assortment of instruments that
become available. I recently got asked by someone with an piccolo and someone
with a trumpet. I can't imagine the result. I always look forward to the
answers on this List for recommendations for different music for different
combinations. Actually a more interesting question than what is your favorite
note is what unusual combinations of music and instruments have you found that
are fun and entertaining to play.
