I'd like to add that choosing a teacher is a critical step. Be sure to
select someone who has experience with adult beginners. Adults learn
very differently from kids. I'd also like to recommend an old but very
good book about learning a musical instrument (cello, in this case) as an
adult:

Never too late : my musical life story
New York : Delacorte Press, c1978.
