Andrew,

38 is not late in life. I believe quite a number of persons on this list have
taken up the clarinet, or re-taken up the clarinet at your age or later.

I personally took up the clarinet 2 years ago at the age of 57. I had played
one for a few months when I was about 10 years old, and the alto sax for a
few months when I was 18. Your motivation for picking the clarinet is
excellent, you like the tone. Well, if you are going to spend hours, weeks,
years playing an instrument, I think it helps if you like the way it sounds!

By all means follow through with your inclination. If you delay, you will
be 48 and asking the same question...
