To everyone that e-mailed me for information on the Copland concerto, here
goes:
As far as I have been able to determine thus far (and I am still in the early
stages) there is not a great deal of infomation published on this piece.
There are, however, several dissertations, most of which I am still
trying to get my hands on! They are:
Bullock, Bruce. "Aaron Copland's Concerto for clarinet: a lecture recital..."
DMA diss, North Texas State University, 1971. (I have ordered this one, and
will let you know how it is)

Del Rosso, Charles Frances. "A Study of Selected Clarinet Literature of Four
American Composers as a Basis for Performance and Teaching." EdD. diss.,
Columbia University, 1969. (I haven't read this yet)

Fleisher, Gerald. "Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra by Aaron
Copland: a Stylistic Analysis." MA diis., University of Rochester, 1961.
(Someone e-mailed me from Rochester, you should be able to have access to this)

Jenning, Vance Shelby. "Selected Twentieth-Century Clarinet Solo Literature: A
Study in Interpretation and Performance." DME diss., University of Oklahoma,
1972. (This thesis covers many works, including the Copland. It is very
much a "this is how I play the Copland" approach)

Snavely, Jack. "Benny Goodman's Commissionaing of New Works and their
Signifince for Twentieth-Century Clarinetists." DMA disss., University of
Arizona, 1991.

(If anyone knows how I can borrow this thesis without buying it, please let
me know!)

Blassingame, John William. "Form, harmonic characteristics and thematic
treatmnt in Concerto for Clarinet by Aaron Copland." MM, East Texas State
Univerrsity,
1976.

Dissertations are a real pain to get through interlibrary loan, I warn you!
It is taking me ages to get things, and some I will have to but from
University Microfilms. So you may want to look at some more accessible
sources.
There are several good biographies on Copland, including his own
autobiography:

Berger, Arthur. Aaron Copland. New York: DaCapo, 1990.

Butterworth, N. The Music of Aaron Copland. Toccato: Universe, 1986.

Copland, aaron and Vivian Perlis. Copland Since 1943. New York:
St. Martin's Press, 1990. This is a very good source, and has Copland's
words on the work as well as Goodman's.

Dobrin, Arnold. Aaron Copland, His Life and Times. (Yikes, I'm missing
the rest of the citation, sorry)

Smith, Jean. Aaron Copland. Hos Work and Contribution to American Music.
New York: EP Dutton, 1955.

There are a few articles on the Concerto:

Collism James. "Copland's Clarinet Concerto" The Clarinet (Fall 1950): 24.

(Sorry, that should be Collis, James)

Maxey, Larry. "Copland and the Clarinet." NACWPI Journal (Spring 1987):4-
13.
Maxey, Larry. "The Copland Clarinet Concerto." The Clarinet 12, No. 4
(Summer 1985): 28-32.

Persichetti, Vincent. "Copland Clarinet Concerto." Musical Quarterly (April
1951):261.

Stier, Charles. "Editions and Misprints: Copland Concerto for Clarinet."
The Clarinet 19, No. 3 (May-June 1992): 52-53.

I'm out of time, so I will give you Part 2 later! I will mention recordings,

and give my 2 cents worth on what I think some of the issues are in this
piece.
