Hi,
As has been the issue on this list numerous times before we all have our
opinions and, contrary to popular belief, many times there is little one can
do to change them. As for Benny and Artie I think it may be well worth your
while to check various other recordings as you may find that your judgement
is wrong. Check out something like "Memories of you" or "Goodbye" by Benny.
You will find he had a soft side too.
As for Mike Vaccaro's suggestion on the Copland, I agree to a point.
Not too start another vibrato controversy but I feel that Benny's vibrato is
very tasteful and in place. After all he recorded with Aaron Copland right
next to him.
You also need to remember some of the swing recordings you may be
listening to of Benny do not have the technical quality of todays recording
equipment and that may lead to the "shrillness". It's great music. Enjoy.
