Fred brings up many good points about losing the focus of our art by trying
to be sonically perfect instead of emotionally charged.

I have to disagree that non-classical musicians don't care about tone. I
think the really good clarinettists, of all types, have spent many, many
years studying to perfect the tonal quality of their playing until they have
reached the point where good tone is achieved without consciously thinking
about it. Once they reach this point, they can devote all their energy to
create "interesting, gestural, musical pieces". These are the truely great
musicians..
