Jimmy Guiffre had, and has, a totally unique clarinet sound. His sound
carves a new definition for the term "sotto voce." When I first heard him I
was a high school student in L.A., and at a club in Hollywood he played tenor
sax as well as clarinet. He developed something of a following (cult
following is a little too strong,) not for his sax playing so much but for
his off-the-wall clarinet improvisations. Two thirds air, one third sound,
and I don't think he ever played higher than throat G, but he has always been
very creative and knows how to swing. I think he is still an active teacher
somewhere back east. Lee Callet
