I have just completed two years of orthodontic treatment. My
orthodontist made me two sets of retainers to wear. One set is the
standard wire imbedded in plastic, better known as a Hawley retainer.
The other set is a very thin layer of form-fitted acrylic called
an Essex retainer, to be used while I play. It is so thin I don't even
know it's there. These can be made for you regardless of whether
you have straight teeth or not. Many times they are made to cover
all the teeth in the upper and/or lower arch. Mine only cover the front
six teeth, though. My lower lip is very appreciative. Hope this helps.
