I've been playing a Gigliotti P34 for several years now and am
fairly pleased with it. But I've been curious about the quality of the
finish work on mine and other Gigliottis I've seen: their bores are not
smoothly finished but have a surface which is instead very finely dappled.
There is some evidence of an attempt to smooth this out close to the tip,
and I have carried this smoothing further down the bore on my own mouth-
piece with some 600 sandpaper. Certainly the inside finish work is inferior
to that on some Vandorens I've looked at recently. My questions:
Is this lack of smoothness detrimental to the mouthpiece's playing
characteristics? If so, are there technicians out there who would work
on these mouthpieces to fix this problem? And if this is a problem, how
come the makers of one of the best stock mouthpieces haven't done something
to correct it? (Or maybe they have- my three are 3-5 years old.)Any
comments would be appreciated.
