Saliva is slightly acidic. If the clarinet is not swabbed and
oiled properly, the saliva can create grooves down the inside of
clarinet. I have seen clarinets that the grooves got so deep, it was
only time before it developed a major crack. Just the thought seems
scary. So it isn't so out of line the thought that saliva can break
down wood.
