Human beings are notoriously sluggish in digesting wood. It is
hard for me to imagine what enzymes might be found in human saliva that
would dent a cellulose molecule.

This may be hog-wash, but I've also heard that our saliva (a digestive juice)
breaks down some of the fibers in the wood of the bore thereby slightly
changing its dimensions.
